Totems
“I want to get rid of the Indian problem. I do not think as a matter of fact, that the country ought to continuously protect a class of people who are able to stand alone… Our objective is to continue until there is not a single Indian in Canada that has not been absorbed into the body politic and there is no Indian question, and no Indian Department, that is the whole object of this Bill.”-Dr. Duncan Campbell Scott, 1920
Through the Canadian government’s bad policy making, treaties, and legislation the First Nations have struggled to regain a foothold in society and maintain their cultural identity after years of ethnocide, having their rights limited, and suffering through residential school abuses whose impact still mar communities to this day. These totems, in part, represent the resiliency and perseverance of many of the First Nation groups of B.C. to regain their voice and power in today’s society to exert influence.
“If you take a bucket of water out of the Skeena River, the Skeena keeps on flowing. Our rights still flow and they will flow forever.”-Chief Delgamuukw
